Greetings,
A brief note about Rule #20 of "The Walking Leader": Have Fun!
That is it. That is rule #20. Two words that carry a big punch.
Have Fun!
Having fun is all about making certain that no matter what you do you do not take yourself too seriously. Do not feel like becoming a Walking Leader is a chore. It should never feel that way.
Like I wrote in the book, if you start to feel that this is no longer fun then it is time to start and revisit what you true intentions are, plan a new course of action, and then act!
It should always be fun. It has to be. Your direct staff knows you better than anyone else in the organization does and they are the ones that promote you or demote you to the rest of the company. I am referring to your reputation. It does precede you. If you are "grump" to your staff then rest of the organization will know about it. If you are "fun" professional then everyone will know that, as well.
When you get out from behind your desk and start walking around the company floor, slap that smile on your face. No matter how long you think you are faking the smile it will eventually stick. That is right keep a smile on long enough it becomes the real deal. An Authentic Smile!
When you smile people will start to believe that you are having fun. Having fun is what it is all about. Having Fun is quite contagious. Keep it up and soon everyone is infected. However, remembering all the time to keep it professional.
Do not fake it! Simply HAVE FUN!

Walking Leader Bonus #5: Another word or two about change
Change has to come. no, no, Change is coming. No! No! No! Change is here?
YES! Change live here! We live in a time of change.
Change is always here. Change never goes away. It is how we deal with change that makes all the difference. How we deal with change is the one thing that can change.
You hear people talk about change being good and change is bad. It can be good for you and appear to be bad for someone else at the same time. Change can be both at the same time. Good for you and bad for someone else or vice versa.
Really, change is what you make of it. For instance, let us use the recent government shutdown as an example. There were some individuals, okay many individuals that were sent home because they were not essential personnel to sustain minimal government operations. Now the question should be passed of every one that went home: what did you do during this unexpected time off? Did you worry? Did you play candy crush? Did you go on vacation? Did you blow to all your savings? On the other hand, did you do something beneficial with that time?
I am more than certain there were plenty of people that were worried, so much that it was physically visible to somebody else. It is understandable especially when there was no resolution after the first week. However, the uncertainty of it all contributed to exacerbating any worries or stress that anybody had.
Notice some of the words that I used: worry, stress, playing, time off, and no resolution.
Are not those words almost synonymous with the way someone feels when changes taking place?
I say yes! You hear those words and many others when change is coming and happening. Very seldom, why I do not know, do you hear the word "beneficial" when changes coming, especially by the individual's affected by the change.
It is all about perspective. How many people sat around and played on their kids play station? How many people went to udemy.com and signed up to take an online training course? Heck, they had two weeks they could have taken three courses! Sure, most of them are not free but are some very good ones (or appear to be good) for under $100.
Before I digress and go somewhere else, I had better get back on track. What I am trying to say is and I said at the beginning: change is what you make of it!
It is all about your attitude, confidence, and knowing that changes are not permanent but change is.
Thank you for your time

Walking Leader Bonus #4: Bring Value To Others
No matter what position you hold in your organization and no matter who you are dealing with there is only ONE thing that matters most: Are you bringing value to others?
When you interact with others are you doing everything you can to ensure that their time with you was more than just a passing moment in time between two people? If you are not too sure what I am talking about, that's OK.
Think about the following: In your next interaction, try to give them an experience like they have never had before. So that when they leave they can take with them something that can never be taken away. An experience that will leave them wanting more.
Try it...
Until Next Time,
David

WL Bonus #3: Do You Inspire Others?
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." -John Quincy Adams
Stop for moment and think about the following: Would you consider what you do today as inspiring to others? I mean does it inspire others to be better people? better employees? better co-workers? better friends? better family members?
If you answer "No" to just one of these, don't you think it is time you start doing something that will inspire people? You know it is time!
Not sure how to inspire others? Try this: LISTEN! Just listen to them and make certain they know you are actively listening. It's that simple.

Don't Feel Intimidated (or Scared or ???)
As a new Walking Leader, you may be tempted to feel intimidated when going out and talking to people outside your department for the first time. Don't be fooled by the "new-ness" of the entire situation but instead embrace it and use it as motivation to extend your hand the first time.
Embrace the new-ness?
Yes, it is in that new that one can go out and extend the hand of greeting and friendship without feeling like the eyes of the organization are on you. That is what makes the entire process of the Walking Leader so special. You are out there getting to know what the heck is going on and meeting the people who are making it all possible.
Remember, in war it is the Infantryman that is on the ground fighting the battle but it is the cook that feeds the Infantryman, it is the Medic that patches him up, it is the finance clerk that gives him a pay check, and so on. What I am saying is that no matter what those on the front-lines can fight the battle but can NOT win the war without the complete support of all the services the organization brings to the fight.
To know how you, your team, your department can properly support those in the other departments within the company you have to get out there, shake their hand and say Hello. No matter what do not feel intimidated or scared but instead take advantage of the situation and be the leader by taking that first step and the rest will follow.

WL Bonus #2: Don't Back Down
"A leader must have the courage to act against an expert's advice." -James Callaghan
There will come a time that you will have to put your foot down and say, "NO!"
It may be the unpopular thing to do but if you truly believe in your heart and know in your mind that the answer is "NO!" then go for it!
Try This Out: Put yourself in the position of a Army Field Officer during World War II. An order comes down from Headquarters telling you that you and your men will charge into that small village at the bottom of the hill and take that town from the very small enemy force. HQ continues reporting that aerial reconnaissance shows a small traffic control force in the town. Reluctantly, you say that the force you have cannot do the job but HQ is insistent. HQ demands to know what has gotten in to you and why do you think 30 men cannot overtake a group of five traffic control soldiers? You tell HQ that in the past 24 hours your Forward Observers have seen all types of equipment and soldiers enter that town as if they are preparing to assault your position. HQ does not believe you as they believe the "verified" Intel that is now over three days old when when the weather was last good enough for aerial recon. You know that if you agree to embark on this mission your men and quite possibly you will be walking into their own slaughter. A completely unnecessary and senseless slaughter.
Your back is up against the wall, what do you do?
Do NOT back down!
No matter what those "verified" experts say you know better because you know your men have no reason to lie to you and report false information. You trust them! You trust yourself! Believe in Yourself and acting against an expert's advice will be easy to commit to.

OOPS! The WALKING LEADER is now available!
Yep, I jumped the gun and look at what I happened: The WALKING LEADER is now available on AMAZON.com (see the link below). Around mid-October the WALKING LEADER will be available at other Bookstores, Online Retailers, Libraries & Academic Institutions.
About The Walking Leader: The Walking Leader is a collection of 20 rules that anyone in any organization, company, group, or department can follow now to help lead them down the path of leadership greatness. The Walking Leader deals with the fact that everyone who wants to succeed within any organization must get out from behind their desk, out of their office or cubicle and walk around the entire organization. While this is a great idea however, over the years there was nothing formally put down on paper as to what to do once someone got out and about the company floor. Lacking any guide, the 20 rules of the Walking Leader were created to ensure that any one that decides to go out for a walk knows they have permission to go out there and do it, and if they need a guide, here it is!

WL Bonus #1: About Change
"People underestimate their capacity for change. There is never a right time to do a difficult thing. A leader's job is to help people have vision of their potential." -John Porter
There will always be a resistance to change. Why would any sane person want to change when everything is going smoothly? Why would the captain of a ship turn his vessel into a storm full of rough seas? Sometimes the closest safe harbor is just beyond the storm ravaged seas. It is going to be rough but on the other side is a place to rest and recover. A true Captain would not turn his ship into the storm unless he knew his crew and vessel could withstand all that was heading their way.
That is the sign of a true leader, when he knows what his people can and cannot do. Then the leader's job is easy because he has helped make the vision of their potential into a reality. It is a reality that will help make the transition during the time of change go so smoothly that they might not have the chance to become resistant to that change.
