WL Bonus #2: Don't Back Down

"A leader must have the courage to act against an expert's advice." -James Callaghan

There will come a time that you will have to put your foot down and say, "NO!"

It may be the unpopular thing to do but if you truly believe in your heart and know in your mind that the answer is "NO!" then go for it!

Try This Out: Put yourself in the position of a Army Field Officer during World War II. An order comes down from Headquarters telling you that you and your men will charge into that small village at the bottom of the hill and take that town from the very small enemy force. HQ continues reporting that aerial reconnaissance shows a small traffic control force in the town. Reluctantly, you say that the force you have cannot do the job but HQ is insistent. HQ demands to know what has gotten in to you and why do you think 30 men cannot overtake a group of five traffic control soldiers? You tell HQ that in the past 24 hours your Forward Observers have seen all types of equipment and soldiers enter that town as if they are preparing to assault your position. HQ does not believe you as they believe the "verified" Intel that is now over three days old when when the weather was last good enough for aerial recon. You know that if you agree to embark on this mission your men and quite possibly you will be walking into their own slaughter. A completely unnecessary and senseless slaughter.

Your back is up against the wall, what do you do?

Do NOT back down!

No matter what those "verified" experts say you know better because you know your men have no reason to lie to you and report false information. You trust them! You trust yourself! Believe in Yourself and acting against an expert's advice will be easy to commit to.

OOPS! The WALKING LEADER is now available!

Yep, I jumped the gun and look at what I happened: The WALKING LEADER is now available on AMAZON.com (see the link below). Around mid-October the WALKING LEADER will be available at other Bookstores, Online Retailers, Libraries & Academic Institutions.

About The Walking Leader: The Walking Leader is a collection of 20 rules that anyone in any organization, company, group, or department can follow now to help lead them down the path of leadership greatness. The Walking Leader deals with the fact that everyone who wants to succeed within any organization must get out from behind their desk, out of their office or cubicle and walk around the entire organization. While this is a great idea however, over the years there was nothing formally put down on paper as to what to do once someone got out and about the company floor. Lacking any guide, the 20 rules of the Walking Leader were created to ensure that any one that decides to go out for a walk knows they have permission to go out there and do it, and if they need a guide, here it is!

WL Bonus #1: About Change

"People underestimate their capacity for change. There is never a right time to do a difficult thing. A leader's job is to help people have vision of their potential." -John Porter

There will always be a resistance to change. Why would any sane person want to change when everything is going smoothly? Why would the captain of a ship turn his vessel into a storm full of rough seas? Sometimes the closest safe harbor is just beyond the storm ravaged seas. It is going to be rough but on the other side is a place to rest and recover. A true Captain would not turn his ship into the storm unless he knew his crew and vessel could withstand all that was heading their way.

That is the sign of a true leader, when he knows what his people can and cannot do. Then the leader's job is easy because he has helped make the vision of their potential into a reality. It is a reality that will help make the transition during the time of change go so smoothly that they might not have the chance to become resistant to that change.
